Inclusion according to
dictionary definition is the action or state of being included, or including
others in a group and structures. Catalyst research says that inclusion happens
when you value both differences and commonalities of others. They also said
that when women and men feel included in their work groups or their workplaces,
they are more likely to do 2 things: Innovate and be a team player. The research also talks about the EACH
method. As a leader, what can you do to make others feel included? The EACH
method gives us the answer. EACH stands for EMPOWERMENT, ACCOUNTABILITY,
COURAGE, AND HUMILITY.
EMPOWERMENT: As a leader, you
enable direct reports to develop and excel.
ACCOUNTABILITY: You
demonstrate confidence in direct reports by holding them responsible for
performance they can control.
COURAGE: You put personal
interests aside to achieve what needs to be achieved and what needs to be done.
You act on convictions and principles even when it requires personal risk
taking.
HUMILITY: You admit mistakes,
you accept and learn from criticism and different points of view, and you seek
contributions of others to overcome limitations.
TAKE 5 ON INCLUSIVE
LEADERSHIP
- Inclusive leadership positively impacts everyone no matter whether you are a man or woman, old or young, or of a particular race, colour, or nationality. Anyone can be an inclusive leader, and everyone benefits from inclusion.
- Inclusive leaders value the diverse talents and experiences of people they influence or who are on their teams.
- Inclusive leaders do not stereotype or alienate people they influence or who are on their team, or make them feel reluctant to share ideas that set them apart which can lead to groupthink.
- When inclusive leadership is effective people feel more included and are more likely to go above and beyond call of duty, suggest new ideas, and ways of getting work done.
- Inclusive leaders are aware of their own biases and assumptions, take action, and execute the EACH method. Empower your direct report and team members, hold them Accountable, be Courageous, and show Humility as a leader.
